Trunks’ training in the Room of Spirit and Time is played from Vegeta’s perspective, he doesn’t get to fight Perfect Cell as a boss fight, and he doesn’t even get his epilogue where he kills Androids 17 and 18 before taking out his future’s Cell. ![]() The few times he’s playable, it’s really only to move from point A to point B, and an opportunity for fans to actually play as Trunks since the game knows he’s just here for show. He has a boss fight against Mecha Frieza, but he then spends the rest of the saga sitting on his thumbs off-screen. Future Trunks honestly may not as well have been playable considering how poorly the Cell arc utilizes him. Unfortunately, it’s at the major expense of Trunks’ character arc. In general, Goku’s given a much-bolstered role, with him even fighting Semi-Perfect Cell. The saga as a whole kicks off with a lot of promise, even going so far as to flesh out the training before the three-year time-skip– allowing Goku to actually stretch his legs as a character before the story removes him. ![]() If there’s one area where Kakarot undeniably drops the balls narratively, it’s the Cell arc. Kakarot is still the best full video game adaptation the Z-era has seen by a mile, but not every story arc was treated with the same respect to the source material. At its worst, it’s a shallow slide show of DBZ ’s greatest hits with a startling amount of (important) content cut to keep the game moving along. At its best, this is a picture-perfect adaptation of Dragon Ball Z that offers a fresh interpretation of the manga’s events than the anime. Kakarot seems to understand that to an extent, but it’s a game very much at odds with itself, both in terms of gameplay and narrative. ![]() At its core, Dragon Ball is a character-driven series. It’s why a game like Attack of the Saiyan, despite only covering two story arcs, can have a much better story than a game like Budokai Tenkaichi 2 which covers virtually the entire franchise rather informatively, but at the expense of character beats– which is always where Dragon Ball video game adaptations fail the most.
